Key Responsibilities for the Senior Operations Manager

As the Senior Operations Manager, you will oversee various aspects of department management. Your responsibilities include:

  • Leadership and Team Management: Lead the hiring, training, and direction of managers and supervisors. Communicate goals, objectives, strategies, and action plans to the team. Provide clear, visionary leadership and serve as a role model.
  • Financial Oversight: Manage day-to-day operational and capital budgets, providing monthly, quarterly, and yearly financial reports. Monitor and control departmental costs, adjusting labor needs based on business forecasts.
  • Performance Management: Conduct performance reviews, coach, and mentor teams to enhance professional management skills. Support succession planning by developing high-potential employees.
  • Customer Service: Address and resolve escalated customer service issues related to deliveries, product quality, and safety.
  • Process Improvement: Monitor and report Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), driving innovation and process improvement. Lead and participate in special projects, including business case development and Request for Proposal (RFP) creation.
  • Safety and Compliance: Promote a safety culture and ensure compliance with Employment Standards Act (ESA), Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), and other regulatory standards. Oversee food safety compliance and manage third-party vendors.
  • Transportation Management: Ensure the safe operation of transport vehicles and manage equipment maintenance. Collaborate with the National Supply Chain team to optimize haul-back opportunities and transport scheduling. Investigate transportation incidents and implement preventative measures. Maintain statistical information on drivers, equipment, and service levels to improve efficiency.

Minimum Qualifications for the Senior Operations Manager

To be successful in this role, candidates must have:

  • Education: Degree, diploma, or certificate in Business Management or Operations.
  • Experience: Minimum of 7 years in senior warehousing, transportation, or logistics management roles. Proven experience in leading large-scale supply chain operations.
  • Technical Skills: Strong communication skills (oral and written). Results-oriented leader with sound judgment and decision-making skills. Experience working with cross-functional teams. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. Experience in project planning, change management, and people development. Strong leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications for the Senior Operations Manager

While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:

  • Experience with Sobeys’ supply chain systems or similar logistics management platforms.
  • Demonstrated success in implementing cost-saving measures within a transportation or warehouse environment.
  • Familiarity with Lean, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodologies.
